When a young man Loss tried farming, for a time in Dickinson county and later in the Dakotas, but he came back to Milford, where he worked as a printer and also did painting and decorating. For a time he and Mrs Beers managed the Farmers' Cooperative store in Milford. He was appointed a rural mail carrier out of the Milford post office, when rural routes were established here, in 1903 and continued serving the route until 1933, when he retired. . . . Carlos Fletcher Beers, one of four children of Dr W S and Martha Fletcher Beers, pioneer residents of Dickinson county, was born in Milford, Iowa, February 1, 1872, and passed away at his home in Milford, August 6, 1944, at the age of 72 years, five months and 18 days. . . . On July 4, 1928, he was united in marriage to Mrs Ethel Brooks, and they continued to reside in Milford. Mrs Brooks had three children, the youngest of whom, Bette, grew to young womanhood in the home and was loved as an own daughter by Mr Beers. He leaves to mourn his passing, his widow, Ethel Beers; two step-daughters and a step-son; Mrs L P Heldridge of Mason City; Mrs Kenneth Weatherwax of Amarillo, Texas, and Dr Glen L Grems, of Webb City, Mo. Besides these he leaves two half-sisters, Mrs Bessie Nicol Jones, of Butte, Montana, and Mrs Bertha Nicol Lintner, of Long Beach, California, and a half-brother, Ray B Nicol, of Milford. There are three step-grandchildren, Jim and Nancy Heldridge, of Mason City, and Deba Ann Weatherwax, of Amarillo, Texas. . . ."²

Grover registered for the World War I Selective Service Draft 5 June 1917 in Montgomery Co, Maryland, where he lived in Potomac and was employed by John Dove of Potomac as a farmer. He was single, tall, medium build, had brown eyes and brown hair.⁴

He saw military service after induction in the US Army 3 Oct 1917 as a private; became a cook 12 Nov 1917 for the 313 Infantry, Headquarters Company. Grover was overseas from 8 Jul 1918 to 29 May 1919 serving in the Avocourt Sector; Meuse-Argonne; and Troyon Sector. A biography in Wikipedia stated: Monta Bell, the film director, producer and screenwriter, was born on February 5, 1891 in Washington, DC. He turned to the stage as an actor after trying his hand at journalism in Washington, DC. He was cast by 'Charlie Chaplin' in the great comedian's "The Pilgrim", which was his sole screen appearance as an actor. He worked for Chaplin as a film editor and assistant director before becoming a director in his own right in 1924. He specialized in comedies of manners akin to early Cecil B. DeMille and Ernst Lubitsch. He directed Greta Garbo in her American film debut "The Torrent" at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Bell left MGM to take over Paramount's Astoria Studios in New York City as head of production at the New York-based Astoria sound studios. While he was studio chief, Astoria turned out the Marx Brothers' debut film "The Cocoanuts" (1929). Going back behind the camera, Bell the director made comedies and melodramas in the early '30s, the time of the "talkies". He quit directing in 1933 to return full-time to producing. Twelve years later, he directed a final film during World War II, the low-budget war picture "China's Little Devils", starring former silent film star Harry Carey.

A biography appeared in a county history for Appanoose in 1878: " Benge, Samuel, farmer, Sec. 36; P.O. Kirkwood; born Oct. 20, 1826, in Madison Co., Ky; when a boy, came with his parents to Indiana; in 1841, came to Des Moines Co; in 1844, came to Davis Co; in 1846, to Appanoose Co; owns 173 acres land, valued at $30 per acre. Married Ellinor Caylor Feb. 28, 1851; she was born in 1822, in Ohio; had three children, two living - Martha J. and Sarah E; lost Rachel M., aged 1 1/2 years. Republican; Baptist."¹²

Household: Samuel Benge (54), Eleanor (wif - 56), and Samuel W Spangler (grson - 21), residing in Sharon Township where Samuel Benge was a farmer (have not been able to resolve parentage of Spangler.)⁴ Samuel Benge appeared on the 1900 federal census of Appanoose Co, Iowa, in the household of William Field Houser, his grandson [by marriage of his daughter].⁵

A newspaper story 13 May 2011 reported some history of Estefana Hicklin: "After the shooting of Alec and Thomas Hicklin, one account reports Phillips, who was a justice of the peace of his precinct, immediately after the shooting appointed Mr. Randall a special constable, gave himself up and they rode into Pueblo. Other accounts record the men of the valley found Phillips near the scene of the shooting took him to the Warner’s Ranch and held him until the sheriff and coroner could be notified and travel to the Greenhorn from Pueblo.

Described as a man between forty-five and fifty years of age, very gray and a confirmed invalid from consumption and heart disease, Mr. Phillips could have become the victim of a lynching. The young men of Greenhorn and Rye had gone to school with the Hicklin boys and the family was well-liked. Within a short time of the shooting they became a mob and threatened to hang Phillips. Mr.(s) Williams and Warner took their prisoner out on horseback avoiding roads and keeping away from ranches to deliver him to the authorities in Pueblo by the next morning.

Which ever account is true, Alec was dead and Thomas severely injured. A bed was made for Thomas in a horse-drawn wagon to take him to doctors in Pueblo. Dr. R. S. Littrell is given credit for saving the life of the sixteen–year-old by removing the slugs from his body.

A Grand Jury investigated the shooting and indicted Phillips for the murder of Alexander Hicklin and for assault to murder Thomas Hicklin. At the arraignment on December 18, 1878, Phillips pleaded not guilty and the trial was set for December 26th.

Extra precautions were taken to protect Phillips during the five days of testimony and legal maneuvering. The case went to the jury on December 30th. Phillips pleaded he was intoxicated at the time of the shooting and there was evidence he had been encouraged by others who were in dispute about portions of the Hicklin land. The prosecutor pleaded for the death penalty. After six hours of deliberation the jury returned with a verdict of only manslaughter.

Judge J. W. Henry gave Phillips the maximum penitentiary sentence of ten years and reported to The Pueblo Chieftain, 'he had made a fortunate escape as in the opinion of the court he was guilty of a much graver crime.' Phillips died soon after being released from prison early for good behavior.

Eventually, the courts upheld the Hicklins’ right to the Greenhorn ranch and ejected the squatters and claimants. It didn’t matter. Thomas never fully recovered from his injuries. He married Emmaline Shaw on October 24, 1881 in Animas City, Laplate County, Colorado and died at the age of 35 on December 31, 1897.

Estefana never fully recovered emotionally. Her willingness to fight waned. In debt for legal fees, she didn’t have the education or experience to cope with the business of operating the ranch. By 1892, she had lost or sold the entire acreage. By 1900, she was penniless and went to live with the Rices on their ranch on the Huerfano.

She never remarried and lived the last 27 years of her life at the mercy of friends. She died on September 1, 1927 at the age of 84 at the home of Mrs. Julia Rice. Her only surviving son, Alfred was living at that time in Victor, Colorado."⁵
