His obituary stated: John R. Harter II, a television journalist for Washington’s ABC affiliate who anchored morning and evening news broadcasts, reported from Capitol Hill and conducted man-on-the-street interviews, died Feb. 17 at his home in Washington. He was 79.

The cause was heart ailments, said his wife, Hilary H. Harter.

In 1966, Mr. Harter joined the news staff of what was then WMAL and, two years later, covered the riots that followed the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. He later made transportation issues a journalistic specialty. For three decades, he wrote, directed and appeared on camera in television videos on aspects of automobiles and driving, which he called “The John Harter Road Test.”

He was also an avocational racecar driver and had competed in Sports Car Club of America races and demolition derbies. He was a restorer of old cars and a founder of the Washington Automotive Press Association, which gave him a lifetime achievement award when he retired in 2006. He subsequently wrote freelance articles about cars.

John Robert Harter was born in Washington on Feb. 7, 1940. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1958 and from American University in 1962. In high school and college, he was a television production assistant at Channels 4 and 5 and assisted in the coverage of the 1961 inauguration of President John F. Kennedy.

In addition to his interest in cars, he was also a hiker. Over three summers, he hiked the 2,181-mile distance of the Appalachian Trail.

His marriages to Jane Bissett and Ann Koch ended in divorce. Survivors include his wife since 2003, Hilary Halsey Harter of Washington; a son from his first marriage, John R. Harter III of New York City; and two grandchildren.²

At her death, or upon the death of her parents, Nicholas went down to Virginia to secure her share of the estate, among which was one negro slave, whom he brought back with him until he reached the confines of Penna. where he gave him his freedom."¹¹

A deed was recorded on 7 Oct 1807 in Washington County, Pennsylvania, for a land sale (121.75 acres and fourteen perches; sold for $517.50) on 2 Oct 1807 by Jonathan Hampton and wife Jemima to Calvin Hathaway (Vol 1T, p. 820) for land on the headwaters of the middle fork of Ten Mile Creek. Witnesses were Jno Heaton and Rhoda Goble - Jonathan Hampton signed and Jemima made her mark. John Heaton appeared in the 1798 tax list for Morris Township, Washington County and was likely a neighbor of Jonathan's.⁵

Calvin is linked to the Day, Rutan and Winget families of Washington County by marriage. He also purchased land from Jonathan Hampton and it may be that this Jonathan is related to Nancy Hampton - he is the only Hampton I can find at this time in Washington County. Jonathan was born about 1766 in New Jersey and Nancy in 1768 in New Jersey so they could be siblings or cousins (if they're related). Need more research to see if Jonathan is related.

Another Hampton was in Washington County in the 1700s but no family link to him is established. The land transaction took place in northwest Washington County, near the West Virginia border on King's Creek. Besides Joseph there was a Thomas Hampton: A deed was executed on 10 Apr 1786 in Washington County, Pennsylvania, for a land sale by Joseph Hampton to Amos Loney, John Leewebster and Francis Holland (Vol. 1D, p. 25) for 400 acres of land in Washington County originally granted to Joseph by warrant and survey in Philadelphia on 18 Feb 1785. Witnesses were John J Woodford and Geo Johnston; Joseph signed his name; recorded on 28 Mar 1787.
