Henry Swann

Last Edited=16 Jun 2023
Henry Swann was born perhaps circa 1755 (based on marriage date.) He was the son of Samuel Swann.

Henry married Ann Dyson, daughter of John Dyson and Lydia Dent, 29 December 1777 in All Faiths Parish, St Mary's Co, Province of Maryland.1,2

Although not named in his presumed father's will (probably because he died about 20 years prior) Henry Swann's father was surely Samuel Swann. Henry married Ann Dyson and this would account for the middle names of two of her children. Henry would have died before about 1785 when Ann remarried James Watson. Note that presumed brother Thomas Mercer Swann named one of his sons Henry.3

Henry Swann died before 1785 (based on wife's remarriage.)

Maria Josefa Tafoya was born between 1814 and 1815 in Mexico (in what became Taos County, New Mexico.)1 She was the daughter of Jose Antonio Tafoya and Maria Francisca Bernalt.3

Maria married Ewing Young, son of Charles Young and Rebecca Wilkins, before 1832 in Taos, Mexico, (in what became Taos County, New Mexico.)4,5

My reading of the baptismal certification of Joaquin Young by priest Antonio Jose Martinez is that Josefa was alive in 1852 when the certification was given. If correct, then she appears in both the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Taos County, New Mexico Territory.3

She appeared on the 1850 federal census of Taos Co, New Mexico, enumerated 5 December 1850. She appeared in the household of Jose Venavides as Ma Josefa Tafoya, age 35, born in Taos County. Two of the children in the household may have been hers.1

As of 1 Jan 1855, Maria Josefa was alive and living in Taos according to records presented by her son when he went to Oregon to secure Ewing's estate.6

She appeared on the 1860 federal census of Taos Co, New Mexico Territory, enumerated 18 June 1860. She was in the household of Jose Ma Venavides (age 49, shoemaker), age 40, born in Taos County, New Mexico. The two children that appeared in the 1850 census also appeared in 1860.2

Sarah E Taylor was mentioned in the following event: In October 1900 John F Shryock and George W Popkins, administrators of the estate of William Shryock, initiated a bill of complaint in Loudoun Chancery Court. They requested guidance of the court to settle the estate given that his papers were difficult to read, many debtors were unknown to the administrators, and that the heirs were so numerous that each individual share would be small - some as little as 1/100th of the estate (he died unmarried and without issue). The known heirs are listed in the chancery case, showing descendency.3

Sarah was buried 30 July 1940 in Forest Hill, Shelbyville, Shelby Co, Indiana.5

Her obituary stated: "Mrs. Sarah Emma Dolan, 78 years old, wife of J. J. Dolan and resident of this city for the last twenty years, died at 2:00 o'clock Sunday morning in her home on First Street. Funeral services will be held at the Loren H. Murphy funeral home at 2:00 Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. Alonzo Hamilton, pastor of the Vine Street Methodist Church, officiating. Mrs. Dolan had been ill since last February. Death was caused by paralysis. She was born in Grant County, Indiana, on April 12, 1862, the daughter of Robert and Rebekah Taylor. She was married to Oscar Hidy, of near Portland, Ind., several years ago. He preceded her in death. A daughter, Mrs. Jennie May Resser, of Missouri, was born to this marriage. She was married to J. J. Dolan, of Converse, Ind., on August 24, 1899. Mr. Dolan survives with the daughter, four grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and two great-great- grandchildren. She was an active member of the Methodist church in Portland and was a member of the Pythian Sisters and of the Royal Neighbors lodge at Montpelier, Ind.

Comments by Lannes Ray Vick – there are several errors in the obit:
this is the only direct “evidence” that Oscar Hidy was Jennie’s natural father.
there is no evidence Sarah Emma married Oscar Hidy.
Jennie’s middle name was Mae and married name was Resler not Resser.
Sarah Emma’s mother was Rebecca not Rebekah.
this is the only document stating Jennie was Sarah Emma’s daughter.3
