Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Evelyn Steger of Arlington; three sons, Ron Steger of Catharpin, Va, and Les and Jeff Steger, both of Arlington; and six grandchildren."⁴

A granddaughter, Laurie Carlson of Auburn, died last year. He was born in New York City, son of Charles E and Helen (O'Keefe) Storey, and lived 50 years in Worcester before moving here in 1984. Mr Storey worked at Washburn-Garfield Co. in Worcester for 40 years before he retired. He previously owned and operated an automotive service station for 15 years in Worcester. He was a member of Holy Cross Church and a former member of St Bernard's Church in Worcester. He was once a member of St Ann's Church in Worcester and taught in its Confraternity of Christian Doctrine program. He was a longtime volunteer visitor to the ill in hospitals and nursing homes. . . ."⁷

The descendants of Aaron Stoy were difficult to sort out until Ann and I communicated with Brenda Moody and Eileen Vitola in 2004-2006. These two descendants of Aaron clarified many relationships, especially in the Wenner and Pollock/Pollick families.⁹

He was noted as a farmer at the time of his death and he resided in Westmont.⁵

Ann married Eli E Bates, son of Joseph Bates and Rebecca [-?-], 17 November 1836 in Burlington Co, New Jersey, (he is cited as husband of Ann Stoy in Philip Stoy's will and this is further supported by the citing of Eli Bates as the brother-in-law of Daniel R Stoy in Daniel's will.)^8,6,1,5

She appeared on the 1850 federal census of Camden Co, New Jersey, in the household of Eli E Bates.¹

Ann Stoy was named in the will of Philip Stoy as his daughter and wife of Eli Bates 16 March 1852 in Delaware Township, Camden Co, New Jersey.^6,9

She appeared on the 1860 federal census of Camden Co, New Jersey, in the household of Eli E Bates.²

She appeared on the 1870 federal census of Camden Co, New Jersey, in the household of Eli E Bates.³ Ann Stoy appeared on the 1880 federal census of Camden Co, New Jersey, in the household of Alfred Bates, her son.⁴

Ann Stoy died 24 March 1883 in Delaware Township, Camden Co, New Jersey, at age 69^7,5 and had the following medical condition noted at death: paralysis of the heart (had suffered with chronic malarial disease for nine years, which infected her heart and produced cachexia - wasting syndrome - accompanied by general debility.)⁷

The funeral for Ann Bates started from the home of her husband, on the Marlton Turnpike, near the tollgate. Carriages were to meet the train from Philadelphia at Springfield Station.⁵

Anna Edna Stoy was born 22 March 1881 in Fairfax Co, Virginia.^5,6 She was the daughter of Charles Stoy and Phoebe Ann Kelley.

She appeared on the 1900 federal census of Washington, DC, enumerated 5 June 1900. Anna E Stoy was a patient at Columbia University Hospital, 1335 H Street NW - she worked as a government clerk.¹

She was a bookkeeper and lived at 720 20th Street NW according to the 1901 Washington city directory.⁷

Anna married Edward Batton Paul 13 November 1901 in Washington, DC, The announcement stated: "Miss Anna E Stoy of this city was married at 3 o'clock yesterday to Mr Edward B Paul of New Jersey. The ceremony took place in the front parlor of Miss Sweeney's residence, 923 12th street northwest, and was performed by Dr Lucien Clark, pastor of Hamline M E Church. The bride wore a simple and girlish gown of white mousseline. Only immediate relatives of the couple and a very few intimate friends were present. After a reception, Mr and Mrs Paul left for a southern tour, after which they will make their home in Westmont, N J, where the former is postmaster."⁸

She appeared on the 1910 federal census of Camden Co, New Jersey, in her parent's household.¹ She appeared on the 1920 federal census of Camden Co, New Jersey, in her mother's household; she worked as a grinder in a factory.²

Bessie married [-?-] Gaunt between 1926 and 1927.³ Bessie Adaline Stoy appeared on the 1930 federal census of Camden Co, New Jersey, in her mother's household; she was a bookkeeper in a cigar factory.³

Blanche M Stoy was born 17 April 1903 in New Jersey.^4,5,1 She was the daughter of Harry P Stoy and Margarethe Gort.

Caroline M Stoy was born 21 September 1848.² She was the daughter of Charles Stoy and Elinora Reeves.¹

Caroline M Stoy died before 1850 (she was not mentioned in the obituary of Charles Stoy in 1905 and did not appear with her family, or elsewhere, in the 1850 census; she likely died young, before age two.)³

Charles Stoy was born 29 December 1818 in Haddonfield, Gloucester Co, New Jersey, (one source has a birth date of 29 Dec 1816.)^7,8,9 He was the son of James Stoy and Margaret Clutch.

Charles married first Elinora Reeves, daughter of John Reeves and Sarah Ann Cloud, 8 September 1842 in Trenton, Mercer Co, New Jersey, (their marriage announcement stated that they were married in Trenton New Jersey by the mayor and that Elinora was the youngest daughter of John Reeve of Burlington Co New Jersey - Charles was referred to as a "merchant of Philadelphia.")¹⁰

Charles Stoy is listed as a wood merchant, 370 S 5th, in the 1843 Philadelphia city directory.¹¹

A letter in the Camden Historical Society states the settlement conditions of the land of the estate of James R Stoy. His heirs - Charles, Sarah Ann, John, Eliza, James and Aaron - agreed to a split of the land and payment of a small cash settlement. Charles Stoy and Richard Stafford agreed to take the Bact[?] Farm for two shares and John, Eliza, James and Aaron agreed to take the homestead farm for four shares, to be divided in the following manner: John Stoy takes all on the east side with mill pond along with all the buildings and gives to James Stoy $4500 for his share to be secured by a bond mortgage on the property. Aaron and Eliza agreed to take all on the west side of the pond and that the road be the division between them. This split of property can be seen in the 1861 map of the Crystal Lake plantation area.^12,13

He performed several marriages in 1850-1851 in Burlington County.¹⁴

He appeared on the 1850 federal census of Burlington Co, New Jersey, enumerated 1 October 1850. Household: Charles Stoy (36), Elenora (26), Sarah (6), Josephine (4), and Mary Carney (17), residing in Evesham Township where he was a merchant.¹ Charles Stoy was named in the will of Philip Stoy as his grandson and son of James 16 March 1852 in Delaware Township, Camden Co, New Jersey.^15,16

Charles Stoy of Mount Holly, Burlington County, acknowledged receipt of $353.21 as part of the settlement of Philip Stoy's estate. The letter was signed by Charles and dated 26 Nov 1853.¹⁷

Charles bought property from John and Rebecca Stoy in November 1859 and was noted as being "of Philadelphia" (see source Camden County Deed Book 37, p 375). Have not located Charles in Philadelphia city directory for 1859-1865.¹⁸

He appeared on the 1860 federal census of Philadelphia Co, Pennsylvania, enumerated 8 August 1860. Household: Charles Story (47), Elenor (37), Sarah (16), Josephine (14), and Mary Chew (17 - domestic), residing in the South division, ward 5. His occupation was not listed, value of real estate was $10,000 and personal goods were valued at $2,000.²

On 20 Feb 1861, Charles and his siblings agreed to divide the ownership of the homestead farm and the Barton farm with Charles and Richard C Stafford taking the Barton farm for two shares and that John and Eliza and James and Aaron Stoy would agree to take the homestead farm for four shares. John Stoy agreed to take all on the east side with mill and pond and all the buildings thereon. John would give James $45.00 for his share. Aaron and Eliza agreed to take all on the west side of the pond and the road to be the division between.¹² Charles Stoy was divorced 2 November 1867 in Wetzel Co, West Virginia.¹⁹

Charles married second Phoebe Ann Kelley, daughter of Edwin Barrett Kelley and Aminda Sayre, 27 April 1868 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, (the marriage certificate was in possession of Mildred Stoy Oliver [see letter 17 Feb 1966 to Ann Arnold Hennings - listed on "Document" page of website] - records in Allegheny Court House prior to 1870 were burned in a fire and marriage records are not available.)²⁰

A land sale was listed in the Washington newspaper 27 Mar 1869: "Messrs Green & Wise, Real Estate Agents, have sold the farm of W T McFarland, at Guilford depot, Alexandria, London[sic] and Hampshire Railroad, containing 93¼ acres, to C Stoy, of New Martinsville, West Virginia, for $26 per acre cash."²¹

A land sale was listed in the Washington newspaper 15 Mar 1870: ". . . The Bower farm, near Spring Vale, Fairfax county; Va, containing 137 acres, has been sold to Mr Charls Stoy, late of Pennsylvania, for $2,630."²²

Henry Bower of Philadelphia and wife Lucretia E Bower sold 25 Mar 1870 to Charles Stoy of Loudoun County a 137-acre parcel in Fairfax Co for $2637 (this was the first Springvale property on Georgetown Pike purchased by Charles and where he made his home for the next 30-odd years). It appears there was a real estate boom in Virginia at this time after the Civil War.^23,24

He appeared on the 1870 federal census of Fairfax Co, Virginia, enumerated 9 August 1870. Household: Charles Story (48), Phebe A (25), Charles W (1), and Amanda Kelley (45), residing in the Dranesville district, Springvale post office where he was a farmer.³

Charles lived in the Dranesville district in the small community of Springvale for much of his later life. There is a good history of the district in a 2001 series fo articles in a Great Falls journal - see attached.²⁵

Ann Arnold Hennings notes that: "Charles appears on Indenture of Lease 10 Jan 1874 with brothers and sisters leasing 106 acres in Newton (Camden Co New Jersey) to William Ward. He also appeared in the 1852 will of his grandfather, Phillip, as the son of James Stoy, dec'd."

The order of birth of Charles and his siblings appears in record 14-03-1695 (Memorandum of Legaciers) of the Haddonfield Historical Society. Also, Charles is indicated as one of the grandsons of Phillip Stoy in record 14-02-1651 where "Charles Stoy of Mt. Holly, Co. of Burlington, NJ, one of grandsons of Philip receives $353.21". Charles is also listed in record 1847-1 (Haddonfield Historical Society) with his mother Margaret, brother John and brother-in-law Richard Stafford, selling timber. An account book of James Stoy's estate (record 14-02-1404/1842-39) has the name Charles Stoy on the outside.

He resided in Camden Co, NJ; Philadelphia PA; Mt. Holly, NJ; Fairfax Co, VA; and Wetzel Co, WV (in record on 19 Dec 1887 - Wetzel Co (Deed Book 23, p 354) as grantor to G. Leap Lot #118, New Martinsville, WV.)²⁶

A newspaper article on 6 Jan 1876 stated: "Messrs George Gunnell and John Money, two young men residing near Springvale, Fairfax county, recently made a wild turkey blind, and went to it last Monday morning to watch for turkeys. The day was just breaking, and the light was only sufficient to distingush objects very imperfectly, when the young men made out what they supposed to be two large, fine turkeys sauntering up to the blind and picking up the bate as they came. Gunnell raised his piece and fired, when two terrible shrieks broke the stillness of the early morning, and he discovered, when too late, the nature of his game. The turkeys proved to be two bright little boys, sons of Mr Charles Stoy, a resident of the neighborhood, who had come out early to gather evergreen. Their stooping position in gathering the running vine had helped to deceive Mr Gunnell, who, upon realizing his mistake, fainted from horror. Mr Money went to the assistance of the children and took them home, when, upon a thorough examination, it was found that their injuries were not fatal, though their poor little bodies were literally peppered with large turkey shot. Fortunately, their faces or heads were not touched."²⁷

He appeared on the 1880 federal agricultural census of Fairfax Co, Virginia, enumerated 29 June 1880. He had 54 acres of tilled land, one acre of permanent meadow (or pasture or orchard or vineyard), and 54 acres of woodland. The fair value of the farm land and buildings was $2,500; fair value of farming implements was $100; and the fair value of the livestock was $245. He had purchased $75 of fertilizer in 1879, paid $150 in wages, which included 40 weeks of hired labor. The estimated value of his farm product was $808. He had 25 acres of mown grass land in 1879, 20 acres of grass land not mown and 12 acres of hay. As of 1 June 1880, Charles had four horses, three milk cows, one "other" cow, three dropped calves; had purchased one cow and sold one cow. He produced 400 pounds of butter in 1879. He had nine pigs as of 1 June 1880, 40 barnyard chickens and had produced 400 eggs in 1879. Charles had one acre of buckwheat that produced 15 bushels; 15 acres of indian corn that produced 400 bushels; 15 acres of wheat that produced 100 bushels.⁴

He appeared on the 1880 federal census of Fairfax Co, Virginia, enumerated 29 June 1880. Household: Charles Stoy (61), Phebe A (wif - 35), Charles W (son - 11), Clifford M (son - 9), Florella H (dau - 7), Imogene E (dau - 5), and Margaret A (dau - 1), residing in the Dranesville district where Charles was a farmer.⁵

Mary E Smith, wife of Edward Smith, sold to Charles Stoy in 1887 a parcel of 120 acres formerly owned by Terry. The property - 50 acres obtained for $250 - was in Springvale, adjacent to lands owned by Dodge.²⁸

Chas Stoy was appointed judge of elections for the Dranesville district, Springvale, at a meeting of the Electoral Board of Fairfax County (John S Pearson was also appointed.)²⁹

He appeared on the 1900 federal census of Fairfax Co, Virginia, enumerated 19 June 1900. Household: Charles Stoy (81), Phebe A (wif - 55), and Susie N (dau - 12), residing in the Dranesville district - no occupation listed.⁶

Charles Stoy died 25 November 1905 in his home, Springvale, Fairfax Co, Virginia, at age 86.⁷

His obituary stated: "Mr. Charles Stoy, Sr, died November 25, 1905, at his home at Springvale, in Dranesville district, in the 86th year of his age, and was buried on Sunday, the 26th, at Brown's Chapel, Rev Mr Miller officiating. Mr Stoy was born in Haddensfield, N J, Dec, 29, 1818. He was twice married. Two daughters survive him by his first marriage, viz: Mrs Carhart, of Pittsburg, Pa and Mrs Ward, of Philadelphia. Eight survive him by the second marriage, viz: Charles Stoy Jr, of NY City; C M and Elmer Stoy; Mrs Moore, Maggie and Susie Stoy, of Washington; Mrs Lowe, of Springvale; and Mrs E A Paul, of N J. He lived one year at Sterling, Va, and 35 years at Springvale, during which time he served four years and discharged faithfully the duties of Commissioner of the Revenue. He was highly esteemed for his noble traits of character, and was ready and willing to go when the summons came. Many friends and loved ones paid him the last tribute of respect, when his remains were laid by those of his wife, who died about three years ago.
